Introduction


Aurora is a 4x game that was originally written for pen and paper roleplaying. More information on Aurora can be found in the discussion thread here:

This thread is for the CJW campaign game which will be played multiplayer using bit torrent sync. The game sees players taking leading roles in the future of 5 super nationstates, who are all on the cusp of developing new technology which holds the potential for a new renaissance in humanities future.

The campaign game will place an emphasis on roleplay, only entirely ran through the aurora engine. As such there is no 'end goal'. It is up for the players to strive and direct their nation where they will, and to face the unknown dangers of the galaxy together (or alone).

1 player takes the role of executor, executing all desired orders for that turn for that nation. Others may additional join, forming a cabinet of sorts, responsible for various differing roles.

History


The early 21st century saw the geographical and political landscape of the world shift dramatically. Struggles for resources, and a worldwide plague pushing humanity into its largest war to ever be seen. Only barely avoiding a full MAD scenario, the old powers of the world were forced to unite or die as the toll from a century of greed took their course. Millions upon millions died, and entire nations were swallowed up or changed entirely, as extreme solutions and ideologies resurfaced to deal with the new harsh reality of an Earth no longer capable of supporting human life.



Beginning in 2032, the war lasted a staggering 35 years, eventually grinding to a bitter halt with the signing of the Johannesburg Accord in the Summer of 2067.

For the last 33 years, an uneasy peace has lasted as humanity focused on rebuilding itself. In this time, clean up crews, environmental programs and other initiatives saw the Earth returned to a livable state, albeit the 'good times' of the early 21st century nothing more than a distant memory. Radiation and Dust levels , returning to normal levels, and a sustainable resource flow saw humanities population surge over 10 billion.

As 2100 approached, the echos to war however began to stir again. The new nations, again running into resource issues as the reconstruction efforts placed heavy burdens on their industries and society.

In the winter of 2099, a discovery was made that would change the world forever. A New Millenium scientist, by the name of Gustav Hellmann, made a fantastic discovery. Whilst carrying out a major particle physics experiment, it was discovered that a parallel universe, close to our own but with radically physical laws, is entangled our own. Theorized as the origin of both dark energy and dark matter, this universe had the startling physical property that space-time there operated as a fluid, rather than a vacuum, allowing for a whole host of exotic particles to form.

Further work revealed that many of these exotic particles contained in the dark matter flow pooled around areas with significant gravitational fields in our own universe, and could be potentially harvestable. The many differing physical properties of these new resources was hailed as having the potential of opening up entire new avenues of research that would fully make use of their quantum behaviors to exceed physical limitations that were up to this point taken as a hard limit by the standard model.



It was not long after that Gustav Hellman published his paper publicly, defying New Milleniums gagging order on his work, that the eminent scientist went missing along with the bulk of his research. Nations blamed the NMs internal security services for his disappearance, but the Propaganda Wing of the Fascist State denied all involvement, claiming the Gustav was a traitor who had fled the country.

The year turned and a new century haa now begun. The race is now on across the globe to make sense of Gustavs revelations, and in turn unlock Pandoras box hopefully providing a new way of fueling humanities need for further resources. Whether war or peace will prevail, only time will tell.

Nations


(nation history here is very sparse, as it will be up to the players if they want to elaborate further and fill in any gaps. Ideally this would replace what is below. Flags the appropriate ones taken out of the Aurora folder so are not all the same image size)

The Confederate States of America



The Confederate States of America was formed out of the ruins of the American Empire, a short lived 'rebranded' version of he United States of America after its descent into despotism.

Unable to prevent a citizens revolt after the devastation of its standing armies, the Southern States were the first to rebel and proclaim their independence from the old Empire near the ending of the Plague War. Showing no more intent to waste American lives in the meat grinder, it wasn't long before state after state seceded from the Empire to join the new Confederation.

With the Empire shattered and unable to continue its war for resources nor enforce its laws, it effectively ceased to exist. The final nail in its coffin was delivered when the Confederate States were the first to approach another nation, in this case the Alliance, to set the road map for peace with the Johannesburg Treaty, granting them the legitimacy to claim the American legacy.

Over the last 30 years, the Confederacy has grown to become ironically one the last bastions of true 'Freedom' on Earth, with a strong population base, high quality of life, and renowned economic and scientific establishments rebuilding much of the America Empires lost strength on the backs of its determined citizens and the incorporation of the remains of the nation of Canada into its fold.

Not everything is rosy however. The extreme xenophobia stoked by the war has meant that for some citizens, the life of a slave is the only one permitted. The awarding of Citizenship is not a given at birth within the Confederacy, and and its acquisition is definitely selectively applied. Without citizenship, much of the protections of the country's New Constitution do not apply.


New Millennium




The oldest of the five nations, New Millennium was formed before the Plague War broke out. The ghost that haunted Europe was ressurected as a response to two great calamities : aggressive actions by the then Russian Federation which initiated the initial stages of the Plague War, and its further annexation of Eastern European states, and the crippling recession which killed off the promise of the European Union and plunged entire countries into bankruptcy.

A rise of national socialism swept Europe, as entire countries went bankrupt. It was in this grim situation where control of the European Union fell into the hands of the fascists.Via a military coup using Europeans self defence forces, the new self proclaimed Fuhrer Dietrich Mannheim soon enacted his iron will, using financial 'incentives' to force other bankrupt European nations to play ball.

The new 'Fourth Reich' was soon to turn its attention away from internal to external matters, using the threat of the Russians as a 'glue to bind the iron will of the people'. The newly organised Wehrmacht proved devastating on the battlefield gaining early victories against the Russians and claiming huge parts of their territory, finally over running Stalingrad. The new blitzkrieg was only halted when the Peoples Red Star Republic was formed, with China swallowing up the remains of the now gutted Russian Nation. This new enemy was to prove a challenge, and with the threat of the newly formed Templo Huitz Alliance stalling Millennium forces in Africa, and the American Empire breathing down its neck, New Millennium hunkered down and weathered the storm for a further decade.

It was the only country not to technically sign the Johannesburg Treaty, although the guns have remained silent since that date and the Reich has seemingly observed the cease fire conditions whilst continuing to pur resources in solidifying its position of having the strongest manufacturing centre on the planet. Conditions within the New Millennium are known to be brutal, with all foreigners or subhumans exiled, or worse, placed within one of its many gulags and concentration camps. The state is known to have the strongest manufacturing capacity of any nation, and maintains a strong research program with an emphasis on both rocket technology and a keen interest in 'Eugenics and Racial Theory'.

In recent years, with Dietrichs death, the Fourth Reich has seen an increased level of diplomatic activity, transparency engagement with the outside world. Whether this signals a relaxation of its iron grip, or a temporary disruption to business as usual remains to be seen, especially with the technological leak which has seen it humiliated on the world stage.


Peoples Red Star Republic




With Russia pressured on all sides, and the American Empires hungry eyes fixed on easier prey, China took its opportunity to settle its grudge with Japan, conducting a lighting war against them which soon saw the smaller nation brought to heel, abandoned by its American 'guardians' who wished to remain away from a situation which could see it fighting a war on two fronts.

The Chinese arose to the new fascist threat when Russia was all but destroyed by New Millennium forces. Absorbing what remained of the Russian nation, the new Peoples Red Star Republic was born, and began a major counter offensive. This influx of trained troops fresh from the Japanese Theatre saw New Millenniums ground attack stalled. In the later stages of the war, with the northern and western lines secured, the Peoples Red Star Republic declared war on the American Empire, ravaging the beleaguered nations west coast with repeated long range missile attacks. Alongside this, the new republic swallowed as man Eurasian and pacific states as it could get its hands on, as its main enemies were tied up in a new fronts that had erupted with the creation of the Alliance stalling their own land grab attempts.

The Peoples Red Star Republic were the last nation to sign the Johannesburg Treaty, in a strong position to negotiate many of its terms. To this day it remains an industrial and military powerhouse, although it research centres are less well developed. In addition, mismanagement of its vast terrain has seen it lag behind millennium in the last 30 years when it comes to manufacturing potential.

A resurgent communist spirit combined with its integration of a disillusioned Russian citizenry has seen most of Chinas slide towards capitalism removed from the Peoples Red Star Republic, and the newly reinvigorated Red Army stands at attention ready again if called upon to defend the homeland in the wake of the new troubling scientific discovery.


Templo Huitz Alliance




Comprised of old African and South American states, the Alliance was formed out of dire need, as the southern hemisphere came under threat from desperate power blocks trying to seize their resources by force.

Taking the brunt of the attack from the short lived American Empire in the Plague Wars, the Templo Huitz Alliance saw the heaviest fighting and death toll of any nation state. Many of its areas saw almost complete devastation, if not from conventional arms but also from the ravages of the plague itself. The support of its individual states meant it could to some degree, counteract the massive disadvantages it found itself having to deal with both militarily and on a health care front.

It was its tenacity, and refusal to give up ground, which eventually forced the war to stagnate, resulting in the ratification of the Johannesburg Treaty, of which it was one of the first nations to sign the document and share its medical research, of which it was a leading pioneer.

Over the last 30 odd years, the Alliance has slowly morphed into a Theocracy, a reaction no doubt to the massive loss of life and cruel conditions seen by its citizens. Although ruled fairly, the concept of a democratic freedom is now alien to its citizens, who are taught to fanatically repeat that Father knows best. Under the Theocracys rule, the state has stabilised well, regrowing its population to a staggering 3.5 billion people. Trade and research restrictions have meant that the Theocracy is now however in a poor place to make use of Gustavs revelations, and must now decide on its future action fast or be again be at the mercy of other world powers.



Abydos Heirarchy




A paranoid meritocracy comprised of the newly inhabited continent of Antartica and the remains of what was once Australia, and New Zealand, the Abydos Heirarchy is a highly insular nation, prideful in its superior, albeit smaller, industry,and world class scientific facilities.

Not a player in the 2032 War, the Abydos Heirarchy is ysecond youngest nation of the big 5, and this plus its relative isolation allowed it to avoid most of the devastation ravaged by the Plague War.

It was with open arms that the citizens of the ruined nations of Australia and New Zealand opened their arms to the burgeoning armies of the Abydos Heirarchy when 'relief' forces moved in after the signing of the treaty of Johannesburg, a move condemned by the Peoples Red Star republic especially as a provocative action.

The discovery of the Trans Newtonian Theory by New Millenium scientists before it's own were even aware of the concept has been taken as a personal insult to the pride of a nation. Responsible to many of the major breakthroughs in the last 50 years, Abydos is determined to regain the initiative on the technological front with its eyes firmly fixed on the heavens.

Mechanics of Play

Aurora is a continuous time game - you queue up orders as the game is paused, and then advance time, and the game carries out your orders. This makes it an interesting mix of turn based, and real time strategy. To facilitate this to be played in a group, using the above tools, please THOROUGHLY read the following as this indicates how we are going to play this in multiplayer.

All players sync with the main folder. This creates a shared space between all our computers. This shared space will contain the following files.

STEVEFIRE.MDB - The main database file. This is where all game data is stored.

TURNORDER.TXT - The main file which will track who is to QUEUE up their next actions for the turn, or if the SM/GM(myself) is to advance time. The players name listed is the current player responsible for EXECUTING their factions orders in the actual game.

GMEVENTS.TXT - A file in which all GM alterations, or rolls that arnt secret are posted so that GM simulated events at transparent and not hidden from the players, so that disagreements cannot be had and that certain things, such as rebellion, are flagged up early and fairly.

There will also be a BAK folder. Do not touch this, this is for the GM to back up after the end of each 'turn'.

This is a SHARED space. Any change on any of these files takes IMMEDIATE effect on other peoples computers. If you for example delete any file, it disappears for everyone. If you edit a file, everyone receives the edit, etc. As such, do NOT move anything out of this folder, except for the EXCEPTION listed below.

The following is how a turn works.

1) Player A checks the TURNORDER.txt to see if it is his turn. If he sees it is his turn, he then checks GM events to see if anything is applicable to him.

2) Player A moves the database file from the sync file from the shared folder into his aurora and replaces his existing one. This gives him the updates from all previous players and conserves their actions. The database DISAPPEARS from the shared folder. Nobody can now check it out, thus stopping multiple saves being in conflicting states.

3) Player A carries out all his orders after selecting his race as the default race and entering his password. By default the password is blank - you should set it to something memorable but not your personal password. This needs to be shared with the GM and any players who are part of your faction.

4) Player A copies his database file from his Aurora game BACK into the shared folder. The file is then synced with everyone and REAPPEARS in the shared folder.

5) Player A then opens TURNORDER file and moves the * star to the next player downs name to indicate it is THEIR turn to queue orders. This is of vital importance - not doing this will slow turns down.

6) Player A then in the SAME file, decides what time increment he wants to set. this can range from 5 seconds to 6 months.

7) Player A then saves the TURNORDER file which is then synced.

At this point, this continues until the Spacemasters turn is indicated in the file. At this point, the Spacemaster will review the requested timescale for advancement, and advance time by the SLOWEST requested time within reason.

EXCEPTION:

There might be times when local events mean that two or more factions require many consecutive 5 second turn orders to resolve, but others not involved dont have anything they can do in such short time intervals. In such a case, players involved in the short scale event will get together to quickly finish the event in consecutive turns so normal play can be resolved.

For example. Millenium and Confederate ships stumble upon each other and open fire, and thus pauses the current turn. The millenium player and confederate player might need 30 or 40 5 second turns to resolve the ensuing engagement. Rather than waste everyone elses time by slowing their time progression to almost nothing and making them upload pointless DB files, a break will be indicated in the turn order file as the following, appearing above the usual order.

It will be up to those players and the GM to then play out and resolve the event so normal play can be resumed, at the point before the event occured.

Rules of Play




PLAYER RULES FOR PARTICIPATION

The rules for participating in the Campaign are simple. Don't be a dick and complete your turns on time.

Rule one - what counts as being a dick is ruled solely by the GM, who has final say on everything to do with the campaign and all decisions are final. If you have a question or are worried about something, bring it up with the GM as soon as possible. This rule is simple - I could list more but I trust you guys not to have to make you sign a 30 page contract to play a spesship game.

Rule Two - To keep the game running smoothly, each faction has a three day limit to queue their orders via their controlling player. If they do not do so, the GM MAY queue BASIC production orders, etc to represent planetary governors doing their jobs - but nothing military etc or research projects that are not designed ie anything that requires full player input. The GM will the INCREMENT the pointer in the TURNORDER file to skip that players turn to ensure play continues in an orderly fashion. Once this has occured, the player cannot request their turn back - by then it is too late.

GM GAME RULES IN EFFECT

Aurora is a complex game, but is still in active development. There are several features that are planned to be implemented but are not currently handled automatically, or on the opposite side, abstracted being not as deep as they are planned to be. Thankfully Aurora is pretty editable using the Spacemaster mode so many of these can be simulated. As such, as GM I will be implementing these as we go along. The current ones are listed below. PLEASE read these as they are important.


1) RESTRICTED GOVERNMENT TYPE CHANGE:

You may only change your government type once every 10 years without increasing unrest by a significant amount. This is due to Aurora not simulating the time it would take to change a government type. No yo yoing back between democracy and despotic fascism because its amusing or to game the bonuses, unless you want the potential for a nasty rebellion because your citizens are sick of your shit.

2) REAL PERSONNEL ASSIGNMENTS:

Currently Aurora allows you to shuffle personnel (not teams) around instantly, in most cases, as far as I know.

For our campaign, you may use ONLY use automatic assignment on MILITARY personnel in peacetime (accessible via commanders screen). In WARTIME you may not use automatic assignment - this represents the logistic overhead of such things in wartime when it matters most. In addition, you may only assign personnel to a post if they are PRESENT on that ship, station, or planet or face the potential consequence (see below). This means you will need to rely on shuttles to load personnel and drop them off at their location.

This applies to research projects - scientists may only be assigned to projects on the planet they are on - this can be checked in the personnel screen. If this is broken, it will be assumed the personnel moved took a private hire ship, cutting all corners to make the journey as fast as possible. Such personnel will be at a flat rate chance of dying in an accident.

This is only a problem if Aurora does not yet track this. The GM will be lenient on this rule, just remember that assigning people and moving them quickly without using an actual ship CAN have consequences and you are warned winking smiley

3) ASTEROID LIFE SUPPORT:

All asteroid colonies must have one Atmospheric Processor per 50 Million People, otherwise it is at risk of citizens dying to maintenance failures, over stressed scrubbers, inadequate ventilation of gasses etc. Problematic outposts will get 3 months notice to rectify the situation before the population begins to plummet to numbers the active Processors can support.

4) TAXES ARNT FOR HOARDING:

At the start of every year, 10% of a countries wealth is eroded from the total it begins with, to represent upkeep needed to keep the nation running (tax system isnt fully implemented in Aurora yet). This will include negative wealth, which will be eroded at 15% to represent interest to make it even more FUN.

5) TECTONICS - SHAKE AND BAKE:

Aurora models the tectonic states of a planet, and lists them on the planet screens. Unfortunately, it does not yet actually generate seismic or volcanic events.

In the campaign, this will be tracked in the most exceptional cases by the GM. The chance of a seismic / volcanic event occurring AND its relative strength will be based on the tectonics level of the planet.

Dead worlds cannot have seismic / volcanic activity.
Minimal worlds will have very rare seismic / volcanic activity, that when it occurs, will most likely be gentle.
Earth like worlds will have medium chance of seismic / volcanic activity and can range from small, to extreme in the rarest of cases.
Extreme like worlds will be very difficult to settle - they will have a large chance of seismic / volcanic activity and such events will always be large scale.

The presence of a Geology team may give an advance warning of an impending event and possibly even mitigate some of its effects. This chance will be based on the teams experience level - better teams are more likely to notice. If multiple teams are present, each gets an attempt to detect the impending event, but the bonuses do not stack - highest is chosen.

Even with this bonus, extreme worlds are going to be highly difficult to colonise - in such cases, you might have to settle for automated surface facilities or an entirely orbital habitat for your colonists / miners. There is only so much you can do against continent sized super volcanoes, 1000 foot tall tsunamis and earthquakes that fall off the end of the Richter scale!

6) REBELLION AND SECESSION:

Aurora does not currently represent full rebellion or secession, apart from its effect on production. To make this more interesting, I will be running the game with the following manual rebellion system.

A colony which goes over 20% unrest will begin rolling on the GMs unrest table. This can cause riots, and other such fun events to occur which occur. The table roll is modified by the severity of the unrest. If a faction is really unlucky or unrest gets very high and rebellion occurs, a percentage of that countries armed forces, as well as civilians, will rise up against the current owners of the colony (with a weight towards less capable combat units). If the colony reaches 100% or more unrest for anyone reason and/or any loyal garrison is completely eliminated the colony will immediately secede and either gain full independence or ask to join another faction based on what is of more benefit to that colony.

Rebellions can be suppressed by destruction of all rebel garrisons. This will immediately reduce the unrest to 0% on destruction of the rebellion, representing the crushing blow to morale delivered by the controlling factions relief forces.



GM RULES ON MULTIPLE PLAYERS ON ONE FACTION

Although each faction starts headed by one player, It is possible for more than one player to be on a faction. If this is the case, the following rules apply to the multiple player faction. This is mostly for roleplay, the below are a guide as to how this should actually interact with Aurora and will allow things to go smoothly if people want to invite people onto their faction - this is all carried out, outside of game.

1) Only one player (known as the executor) can actually carry out any orders and is explicitly nominated to carry out the various wills of the cabinet. No other player but this player is allowed to actually queue actions - the remaining players may only VIEW the database file, not make any edits.

2) Any extra player should be designated a role - ie Minister of Defence. Responsibility for supplying their factions executor with the orders to carry out for their department in time for their time slot is of maximum importance. These orders should be as high level as possible for speediness sake, if possible, allowing the Executor to carry them out in a timely fashion.

3) The executor cannot carry out any orders that would be counter to the instructions given to him by the head of a department without a vote of all players within that faction to support his action to over rule it. In the case of a tie, or only two players in the faction, the Executor has the final say. If players wish to modify this to suit their faction government type, speak to the GM.

4) Responsibility of a post are set by the executor and cannot be changed whilst someone is in that post without their permission. When nobody is within that post, its responsibilities can be changed. If you want to make a Minister of Clowning, feel free.

5) If the cabinet is absent or is for some reason neglecting his post, and the three day limit is approaching, the Executor may via executive order carry out that factions turn. If any player on that faction has issue with his Executors use of this executive order and feel it is being abused, feel free to speak to the GM who will rule if its correct use or otherwise. Executors found to be excessively using this executive order will be impeached and replaced.



GM RULES ON FACTION STATES, FACTION RELATIONS AND NPCS(Destruction, Becoming a Vassal etc)

Faction States

The only state currently is that of either Alive or Destroyed.

A faction is only considered destroyed if all of its populace are killed, or it loses control of all of its colonies. The exception to this is if a faction concedes, in which case the remaining colonies are treated as if they had seceded from the empire (breaking up into independent states, possibly AI controlled, or joining another existing faction). For a faction to concede, it must be agreed by all active players on that faction.

Once a faction is destroyed, its players may either join another faction, or take over as executor of a faction that is being run by the GM. This should be done after discussion with the GM - no stealth joining another players faction without letting the GM know what you are doing first.

Faction Relations

This will be entirely role played between players, with requirements, duties and consequences set by the players. No GM involvement is necessary. In the case of Vassalage for example, it is up to the players to agree to the terms of the contract in which one side becomes the vassal ie what dues are owed to the controlling empire, what duties it fulfills for its vassal in return etc etc. Any consequences from breaking this should also be role played out with consequences within the game. Dont just say you are going to blockade someone - actually blockade them and destroy their civilian ships or risk looking like you have no teeth!

NPCS

NPC Factions will not be interfered with by the GM but will play the game fairly based on initial starting conditions. All diplomacy with NPCS will be done using the inbuilt diplomacy system. This keeps things fair and allows other people to actually have an effect on their diplomacy / how they are perceived using ingame methods and reduces the workload on the GM.

If players come across an aggressive npc, even if its a very unfair fight, the GM will not interfere. Space is harsh, whilst a tear might be shed, the SM will not be coming to teleport your ships to safety or using some other gamebreaking tool to give you an advantage.

NPCs will be generated randomly by the game, or will be created by a GM if a factions colony secedes and decides on independence after a grace period of 3 turns, during which any new player can instead play the seceded colony as a new player faction. If this time limit passes, it will be assigned as an NPC 'race' and it will no longer be able to be played by any human player.

CURRENT GAME STATUS:

We are now beginning the first turn - this turn will take longer than others.

I will be contacting people when it is their turn to play with the sync link, and to also guide them through the first turn and ensure their faction is set up properly and to answer any questions.

If you are not happy with your flag, place a new one into YOURSYNCFOLDER/Custom/Flags. If these sub folders dont exist, create them. After the end of turn one, any custom content will therefore be easy for others to find and put into their aurora.

What they aren't telling folks is that "asylum" literally means that, they will put your ass in a institution until you are properly "indoctrinated"....ha!...they say it point blank right there! They will brain wash you for no les, NO LESS than FIVE YEARS! Sentenced to manual hard labor, where breaking "THE LAW" is not meeting your quota, what happens then? Well....im sure not as bad as what would happen to you in the New Melinium, where a bullet to the neck and a mass grave would be your future....no....most likely a life sentence to the gulags chopping wood....


....and even knowing all this, even with our kindness to the immigrant labor that we so kindly give work and food, flock too....after letting them have honest work, no not "citizenship" but honest work and some pay...they even CAN become citizens if they choose, through honest American military service, providing relief to countless millions in disaster regions of our great confederation....

"We are the uppercut in the chess match! We are the vuvuzela in the marching band! We-"

At the mention of the nation's symbol and official instrument, the Father's voice disappears beneath the deafening, droning sound of millions of brightly coloured little horns. A great screen behind him displays the words of the speech that nobody actually pays attention to, including a stern warning that it is now considered a grave sacrilege to cut a banana before peeling it.
