So I bought this game a few weeks ago. It's ok, once you install the long war mod and aren't ridiculously limited any more and the aliens are actually good. After getting recked the first game (because I immediately went on iron-man + hardest difficulty) I am now making a take 2 on it and I need your help.

Just like the first game I'm looking for victims volunteers. You get your choice of race, gender, nationality, weapon armour, primary and secondary utility item and your sidearm. If any of you has played this you can choose what you look like as well, but I can't go into detail with others as there are far too many options for me to show. As the game will progress and I unlock gene manipulation (yes I'm not going the mec way, because we are Clan warriors and I probably won't be able to go both ways).

These are your choices:

DISCLAIMER: I can't change the gender, nationality or class once it has been assigned. I also can't predict which of the two classes a specific solder will get assigned or what class gets assigned after I press randomly assign class button. If you want a specific combination you may need to wait a long time.

NEW RULE: Due to the fact that I can't change nationality and that the chance of getting a correct Nationality + class combo are very improbably I'll be enforcing the rule that you can choose EITHER Class OR nationality, but not both. You can still tell me the class preference if you have chosen nationality and hope oyu get what you wished for.

Abolished as I figured out the complexity of commanders choice option. I can now select your class.

- Shotgun (4-8 Damage, 4 shots per reload, 16% Crit, 8-11 Crit damage, cannot be used by recruits, snipers, gunners or rocketeers).
- Sniper Rifle (4-6 Damage, 5 shots per reload, 20% Crit, 6-9 Crit damage, -1 Mobility, Cannot move and fire, Only usable by snipers)

- Battle scanner (Grenade that reveals an area, Only usable by Scouts and Engineers)
- Ceramic plating (+1 HP)
- AP Grenade (02-06 Damage, doesn't penetrate cover, destroys alien equipment)
- Flashbang (Reduces movement and aim of enemies caught within for one turn. Psionics and robotic enemies are immune)
- Smoke Grenade (Confers defence bonus to everyone within radius)
- HE Grenade (01-05 Damage, penetrates and destroys cover)
- Laser Sight (+4 accuracy)
- Medikit (Restores 3 health, stops allies bleeding out, neutralises acid, confers partial immunity to acid).
- Rocket (Allows rocketeers to fire and additional rocket)
- Shreder Rocket (Allows rocketeers to fire and additional rocket, rocket deals DOT damage)
- Drumm ammo (+2 ammo, -4 accuracy, Only usable by Infantry, Scouts, assault, Medic and Engineer)
- Motion Tracker (Scans 5 tiles around soldier illuminating plasma bombs, melded humans, civilians and meld chanisters. 3 charges, reaches beyond LOS).

Our base is situated in Europe in Germany, but our initial founding country is Great Britain. X-Com project was recommended by an old SAS General giving all our soldiers +3 Accuracy.

I'm debating whether I make this some form or RP as well. Obviously you guys wouldn't be able to control your characters, but you would be able to write Logs and talk to each other after missions. Hmm. That will take a lot of my time and I'm not sure I have that much.

You say that you want to be up close blaming everything up in your face.. bu then you say then when 10 chrisilids appear and proceed to wrench your jaw open and spit alien baby's down your throat that then take you over turning you into a fleshy mindless husk that then bursts into another chrisilid upon deat ( or would do in the original)

But dont worry I will be there with a big ass machine gun to brap brap brap then blow their ass down.

I'll me playing this again tomorrow or Sunday. Sry it takes so long between sessions, but with me also trying to write up an interesting story it takes about 3 hours per hour of gameplay to get everything sorted.

And my dad got me back into MWO.

Fair play man just take your time there's no rush

By the by with "commanders choice" you CAN choose your class.. when the scrubs get promoted rather than doing it at debrief, leave it for the barracks instead and use the next/previous soldier buttons to change class.

Also fuck crisilids.. they where horrible before but with this mod they are just please no...

Another mission. Some very difficult choices. The American guy I was hoping to transform into Dierson died. Horribly. I also gut a scour on a Norwegian character. After long and careful consideration I'll be giving this one to Ice Vamp. sorry Ensalus. I know you were first, but IceVamp specifically requested a Nordic character and this is the only Nordic character I got. There will certainly be another scout in the future, but this combination is very rare.

Also Yalk. I have an Irish assault for you. Either that or you can wait and hope that my only remaining US guy gets promoted to the correct class.

I finally figured out how it works. Basically what you need to do is the following:

1. Have your solder get enough XP to get promoted.
2. NOT promote him in the debrief screen
3. Go to barracks, select he solder to be promoted
4. Enter ability screen and THEN press shift/tab or next/previous soldier buttons to select a class.


If you do you promotion in the debriefing screen you will not be able to select the class. You also cannot change the class once your solders have already been promoted. Sadly this means that IceVamp you must either remain a Scout or be put on a waiting list and hole that one of the 3 soldiers I have hired will come from a Nordic country.

Having finally figured this out luckily means that wait times will be a lot sorter unless you want to specify your nationality and that I no longer need to enforce the nationality vs class rule.

Edit: I also have dev console turned on. That means I can edit the second wave options. I'm thinking about enabling wear and tear now that there is an option that repairs only cost time.

Also here's what I learned. The difficulty I'm playing on is meant more as a how long can you last challenge and it's actually not expected of the player to win here. Do I go and reduce difficulty or enable bronzeman mode (in bronzeman mode I'll be able to restart failed missions) or do we go balls deep and die a horrible, horrible, slow and painful death?

I mean that in a good way.. Long War is what the game should of been.. some parts of it are a little janky but that's more the games base development and the mods development moulded around the base game mechanics.

Like I said some missions I had to do where just painful in a "Fuck that was hard!" and half of my best guys are dead or wounded for 4 months"

Example being ever now and then you get a "Council" mission witch can be good as you get a chase reward and often enough lower panic in said country/continent. One such mission is bomb disposal where aliens have set up a big bomb and you need to find it and deactivate it in a limited amount of turns and there are power nodes dotted about that give you more time.

Generally considering half the time with how many aliens there are and how often your guys miss and you only initially have 4 or 5 turns the missions are damn near IMPOSSIBLE!

But in the default game there where a handful of Thin Men that where squishy as fuck and you could rush in and stop the bomb in moments.

But not this mission oohh noo.. Starts out thing are going smoothly and a small pack of weak sectoids are dead and a couple of power nodes deactivated and bought me some time...

The map was one long street littered with cars and trucks and the like and was stormy as fuck. Moving further up the road a little ways and there's a fucking legion of Mutons! and they all had HEAVY PLASMA RIFLES!

8 MEN! I went in there with 8 veterans and only ONE of them made it back with only 2 health remaining. (poor sod I had to sacrifice to shut down the bomb as I only had one turn remaining)

That one remaining guy was promoted about 4 times but man the price for that victory was fucking heavy.

And the campaign now is getting pretty shit hot. its good though that now I have tech that's on par with the aliens and my soldiers dont outright die in one go.. even scrubs have a high chance of survival and why unless I cant help it I take 2 medics with me.


BUT that is why Long War is a fantastic mod and definably worth getting to play the new XCOM the way it should of been but wasn't thanks to filthy casual consoles

Dont worry Zwei as you going for the cannon ending you know the one where XCOM lost because Firaxsis cant be bothered to attempt underwater maps or rendering Gilmen and Deep Ones in full 3D in the Unreal-3 engine.

And of course this way they dont have to.. all they need to do is just re-texture the existing assets and add some angry triangles onto vehicles and you have the sequel

And our Sectoid friends above lead by the beat poppin Mr G-Money will be there to happily steal.. sorry take all our money for the revolution...

Been playing this mod and literally played almost 9 hours this one weekend, which for me is quite a lot these days.

What i like most is how it feels like the aliens actually have a strategy and are trying to execute it.. rather than just responding to you.

It feels ALOT more dynamic.

Oh yeah, It adds like 200% more content and alien assets including the odd appearance of what seem to be "Hero" units.

Like I had a Mechtoid that had 50hp and did insane amounts of damage. It did like 20 damage a shot and oneshot half my squad, it was the one time I had to GTFO and abandon a mission as I was just losing too many guys to the damn thing and I was only doing like 3 damage to him as he had insane DR.

One thing I have not happen yet is base assault.

In the default EW (Enemy Within) the base defence happens at a set point in the "story" but with Long War I thin it will happen randomly depending on how aggressive you have been with the aliens to the point where they get pissed off and try to full force you

Yeah thats how it works from what ive been reading.

So glad i have one girl with the auto CQC perk. If it wasnt for that, i wouldnt have a chance in this terror mission im half way through.

Killed about 12 chrysalids in two turns as they just keep swarming me starcraft style. If it wasnt for the shotgun reaction fire theyd have murdered me.

Yup just pick a corner use a scout or a due with super mobility to lure them all in then spam overwatch and shoot more on your turn and hope they dont get close enough.

Though sometimes their AI does durp out in that they will move next to one of your guys but rather than using that chance to kill or badly hurt them they will instead then move again next to another dude and you just go err wut!? then just gun them down.

it fine you have our genetic material on file you can just bring us back when you have the means to do so. or just transfer our conciousness into a mechanical husk.

And just a tip yes you can heal a MEC with medkits you dont need to do it with a arc-thrower.

I did some more updates yesterday and today in the RP thread. Still haven completely caught up with the game timeline, but instead of RP being 3 mission behind it's only 1 mission behind now. I'll probably do this tomorrow and then play some more.
